NATIONAL CALL FOR CASES OF EVICTIONS AND EVICTION NOTICES DURING PANDEMIC IN INDIA
ASKING US TO REMAIN IN HOUSE AND ARE MAKING US HOMELESS TOO!!
While the world faces the COVID-19 pandemic, several steps have been taken to mitigate, reduce the impact and control the spread of it. COVID-19 was notified as a disaster on 14th March 2020 after which National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and Epidemics Act were enforced in the country along with a call for nationwide lockdown which went for about 3 months in different phases. While the country was kept to their houses during lockdown some serious violations on housing rights took place. A recent report by Housing and Land Rights Network shows that there were about 20 incidents of eviction during the pandemic. Adding some other media reports on evictions, the number goes to more than 30 such incidents in the country by the end of September 2020. Analysis of reasons put together has been about implementation of smart cities, beautification, encroachment clearance and execution of Court orders among others. Cases of eviction indicate massive devastation of human habitat and livelihood during the pandemic, it also points to violation of human rights.
Rashtriya Awas Adhikar Abhiyan is a national campaign consisting of representatives from civil society organisations, activists, advocates, academicians and community leaders working on the right to adequate housing.
